General Questions
What types of classes do you offer?
We offer a wide variety of classes: student classes (kids/teens) such as classical ballet (RAD|AAB), AIDT modern, tap & hip hop, contemporary, acrobatics, solo Latin, body-conditioning; adult classes (beginners to experienced); a High Performance Programme for dancers seeking advanced training; private lessons; special event choreography (e.g., weddings); and event entertainment.
How do I enrol or book a trial class?
You can contact us via email (info@gssdance.co.za) or visit our “Enquiries” page. We also encourage booking a trial class to experience our studio.
Where are you located?
Our main studio branch is located at Atholton Primary School – 23 Kingston Drive, Herrwood Park, Umhlanga, 4319. We also teach at Glenwood Boys High School, Durban, and Little Treasures Preschool, Mount Edgecombe.
What are the age ranges and levels for your classes?
We cater for all levels, from beginners to advanced, and for various ages (children/teens/adults). The exact class and level allocation depends on the student’s experience, goals and dance style.
Do you require students to wear a uniform or specific attire?
Yes. We pride ourselves on high standards of appearance and grooming: correct uniform, correct footwear, hair neatly styled (ponytail/plait/bun) especially for ballet. Please enquire about our dancewear shop catalog for uniform requirements.
What are your fees, payment and notice policies?
- A non-refundable registration fee is required to secure new students.
- Annual fees are due upfront or can be paid termly/monthly depending on arrangements.
- Fees are based on enrolment and are not refundable for missed classes, holidays, or illness.
- If you decide to leave the dance school, written notice of one full term is required.
What happens if I miss classes due to illness or other commitments?
While we understand life happens, continuous attendance is encouraged because dance is a discipline. Missed classes are not refundable. For examinations or productions, minimum attendance (around 70%) is required. If contagious illness arises, a doctor’s clearance and note may be required before returning.
Are examinations, productions and competitions part of your programme?
Yes — for students from a certain level upwards, they will be entered for examinations (e.g., RAD/AAB/AIDT/TDA) and stage productions. Participation is based on the teacher’s assessment of readiness. Competitions are available for those who opt-in and meet the commitment criteria.
Do you have adult/beginner-friendly classes?
Yes — we have adult classes designed for both beginners and more experienced dancers looking to refine technique, stay fit, enjoy movement and build confidence. You can learn more about our adult classes here.
Can I book private lessons or event choreography?
Absolutely. We offer private lessons tailored to individual goals and also provide wedding-dance choreography and event entertainment services.
What health & safety measures do you have in place?
We maintain a safe and healthy environment: first aid trained staff, first aid kit on site, emergency protocol, and adherence to health protocols (including COVID-19 compliance).
What if I have a child who wants to dance but isn’t sure which level or style?
We recommend you contact us for a consultation/trial class. Our faculty will assess skill, interest and experience, and guide you to the most suitable class or pathway.
How can I stay updated on class schedules, events or studio news?
We maintain our website, social media channels (Facebook/Instagram/TikTok) and communicate via email/WhatsApp groups for announcements.
What happens if I miss dedicated rehearsals for shows or competitions?
Because productions and competitions involve extra rehearsals, attendance is essential once committed. If you cannot attend, you must inform us by the stated deadline.
Can a student attend other dance schools while enrolled here?
No — students enrolled at GSSDANCE may not take classes at another dance school without prior consent from the principal.
Adult Dance Class – FAQs
I haven’t danced before — can I still join?
Absolutely! Our adult classes welcome complete beginners as well as those returning to dance after years away. Our teachers guide you at your own pace so you can build confidence, coordination, and strength.
What should I wear for class?
Comfortable activewear or dance attire that allows free movement. Ballet slippers, jazz shoes, takkies, or barefoot depending on the class style. We’ll guide you after your first class on any specific items.
Do I need to register for a full term, or can I attend casually?
We offer both options! You can sign up for a full term for consistent progress, or attend drop-in classes if your schedule varies. (WhatsApp us for more information on our class packs.)
Do you offer fitness-focused dance classes?
Yes. Many of our adult classes focus on strength, flexibility, and expression while giving a great workout!
Is there an age limit for adult dancers?
Not at all! We have adults in their 20s through 60s who dance purely for joy, wellness, and self-expression. Everyone is welcome. Contact us to find the best class suited to your experience level.
High Performance Programme – FAQs
What is the GSSDANCE High Performance Dance Programme?
The HPDP is an intensive, advanced-level programme designed for dancers with strong potential, passion, and commitment. It develops technique, artistry, strength, flexibility, and performance quality through a structured 4–6 day weekly schedule, personalised coaching, mentorship, body conditioning, and advanced choreography training.
Who can join the programme?
The programme is open to dancers aged 11 and older who have a strong foundation in Classical Ballet and are aiming for a professional career in the Arts or wish to compete at a high level locally or internationally. Admission is by teacher recommendation or audition.
Do I need a ballet background to join?
Yes – solid classical ballet foundation is essential. Junior dancers should be at pre-pointe (RAD graded level) and senior dancers at RAD major/vocational level. However, if the dancer shows a strong technical background in modern or contemporary styles they will also be considered.
What is the difference between the Junior and Senior HPDP groups?
- Junior Programme (Ages 11–13): Pre-pointe level; focus on technique, strength building, and pointe readiness.
- Senior Programme (13/14+ years): RAD vocational level; includes weekly pointe work and advanced training intensification.
How often do High Performance dancers train?
HPDP dancers train 4–6 days per week, averaging 5.5–8 hours. This includes ballet, selected majors, body conditioning, extension classes, private coaching, and choreography training.
What styles and training does it include?
The programme incorporates ballet, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, body-conditioning, and performance coaching. Guest workshops and mentorship are offered throughout the year.
Are private lessons included in the fees?
Yes — each dancer receives one private lesson weekly, included in the fee structure. Additional privates (e.g., for competition solos, strengthening, or teacher-training mentorship) can be booked separately.
What performance opportunities are available?
Students participate in studio showcases, national competitions, and special projects that highlight versatility, artistry, and stage presence.
What is the commitment expectation?
The HPDP requires full commitment for the entire year from both the dancer and their family.
- No refunds for missed classes or cancelled private lessons
What is the audition process?
New dancers must complete:
- A studio audition
- A meeting with parents for feedback & programme suitability. Spaces are limited and accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
- A physiotherapist assessment
Will the programme help my child pursue a dance career?
Absolutely. The HPDP provides: technique refinement, performance coaching, competition experience, guidance for tertiary dance programmes, and assistance selecting international intensives and preparing for auditions.
Does the programme build confidence and life skills?
Yes! The structured training enhances: confidence, mental focus, discipline, self-motivation, resilience, as well as academic performance. Our parent and dancer testimonials speak to noticeable growth in both dance and personal development.
